WESTON, Vt. Sit yourself down in this wooden chair right here, by the potbelly stove and the pickle barrel. Chilly sweat is dripping off bottles of Sarsaparilla in the oak-and-glass refrigerator. Checkers your game? A faded board awaits a skillful move. The penny candy counter overflows with Mary Janes, Root Beer Barrels and Jaw Breakers. Flies are stuck to the fly paper.

After all, this is the Vermont Country Store, nostalgia central to southern Vermont.

In the small towns of Vermont, folks still gather at the country store ``for anything from milk to nails to social conversation,'' said Elaine Young, director of communications for the Vermont State Chamber of Commerce. This month, the locals will have company, as a crush of tourists descends on the state seeking foliage and quaint surroundings. The leaves should peak sometime in the next week or two, Young said.
