BRISBANE, April 21 AAP - Former Queensland Australian Medical Association president
Ingrid Tall has been pre-selected by the Liberal Party to contest the seat of Brisbane
in the coming federal election.
Dr Tall last night defeated Sebastian Monsour by 55 votes to 43 in a pre-selection
ballot of around 140 people.
"He accepted defeat with grace, which is an admirable trait and something you need
to have perhaps in politics," Dr Tall said today.
Brisbane is currently Labor's second most marginal seat in Australia, held by Arch
Bevis by a scant 0.9 per cent.
Mr Monsour is the brother-in-law of new Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman.
He was narrowly defeated by Mr Bevis in the 2001 election.
Dr Tall said Mr Campbell's win last month in Brisbane City Council elections showed
the Liberal Party was gaining strength in Brisbane after a quarter of a century of Labor
domination.
"The Labor stranglehold on the electorate of Brisbane is weakening and really it's
time for a change," she said.
Dr Tall said she would campaign on a platform of health and education.
Smoking and obesity rates were high in Brisbane and the capital city was one of Australia's
least educated, she said.
