WA:Shovel-wielding teen charged with robbery

PERTH, Dec 7 AAP - A 16-year-old Perth boy who allegedly pushed two young girls to
steal their mother's handbag and then threatened witnesses with a shovel has been charged
with robbery and criminal damage.

Police say the two girls, aged 10 and 12, were in the Warnbro Fair Shopping Centre
car park with their mother about 6.15pm (WST) on Monday when the mother returned to the
shopping centre to hand in some property she found.

The boy approached the two girls, pushing them and stealing the mother's handbag from
her shopping trolley before running away.

The 10-year-old girl fell to the ground and suffered minor injuries.

Police say several witnesses gave chase and cornered the boy who threw the bag into
some bushes before running off again.

The witnesses followed him to a house where he grabbed a shovel and threatened them
before running away.

During the chase, the boy was tackled to the ground and eventually caught.

He was arrested and will appear in the Rockingham Children's Court on December 22.
