NEW YORK, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- New York-based technology company Scientific Media, Inc. today announced the launch of DOTGO, a powerful new mobile publishing platform, at the prestigious DEMO launch venue in San Diego. DOTGO is a revolutionary product that allows any company, brand, or web site to quickly, easily, and cheaply offer mobile services, with particular emphasis on text messaging.
To access information via DOTGO, users simply send a text message starting with an internet domain name to the "short-code" phone number D-O-T-C-O-M, which corresponds to the digits 3-6-8-2-6-6 on a standard phone keypad. DOTGO then consults the specified web site for instructions on composing the reply and responds with one or more text messages providing the requested information.
For example, to read breaking news headlines from cnn.com, users text "cnn" to the phone number DOTCOM (368266). To receive a weather forecast from weather.com, users text "weather" + a zip code to the phone number DOTCOM (368266).
"It's really a way to extend the internet into text messaging," says DOTGO co-founder Stefan Gromoll. "DOTGO gives anyone with a cell phone a consistent and easy-to-remember way to interact with any web site just by sending a text message."
DOTGO allows web sites to completely specify what is returned when users text their internet domain names, providing what amounts to a powerful mobile publishing platform that was designed from the ground up for text messaging.
"We offer an incredibly powerful and flexible software infrastructure," states DOTGO co-founder Kenneth M. Lanzetta. "There's really nothing else like it. Anyone with a website can use DOTGO to implement pretty much any text-messaging service you can think of."
Text messaging is an extremely popular and rapidly-growing form of communication. Because virtually all mobile phones support text messaging, DOTGO allows web sites to build and deploy services that can reach the widest possible audience of mobile users.
"Text messaging is the 'lowest common denominator' technology that works across all mobile phones," adds Lanzetta. "By using DOTGO, you know that the information you publish is available to literally anyone with a mobile phone."
DOTGO also operates the short-code phone numbers DOTEDU (368338), DOTGOV (368468), DOTNET (368638), and DOTORG (368674), allowing users to access information from educational, government, network, and not-for-profit web sites.
For example, to view an article from wikipedia.org, users text "wikipedia" + a subject to the phone number DOTORG (368674).
DOTGO describes its service as faster, easier, and more reliable than mobile web browsing in many practical situations.
"For accessing many types of information -- say train schedules or movie show times -- sending a text message can be a whole lot faster and easier than mobile browsing -- especially given the small screens and cramped keypads of mobile phones," says Gromoll. "Mobile browsing is often slow and cumbersome. Text messaging is fast and direct."
DOTGO is already in use by a number of commercial, educational, and not-for-profit organizations, including General Mills, Stony Brook University, and the Bowery Mission. In addition, DOTGO is already in use by more than 50 radio stations nationwide.
